Crews continue to make great progress on our Parks & Rec Bond projects! Construction is close to wrapping up at Caldwell Park and the Academy-Gibson Athletic Fields, construction will begin at David Phillips Park this summer, and the final design for the Academy-Gibson Skate Park, Pump Track, and Sculpture Garden is nearing completion!

Marvin Caldwell Park:

Crews at Marvin Caldwell Park worked on the stage and seating areas of the Robert Mathis Amphitheater, are nearly finished with the covered basketball courts, and are planning to get the splash pad and playground equipment installed in the next two weeks, weather permitting.

Academy-Gibson Athletic Fields:

Installation of the new artificial turf baseball and football fields are complete, along with the baseball field backstop and netting. Crews continued work on renovations to the existing buildings and construction is nearing completion on the new restroom and storage facility. The outside of the building is now complete and crews are wrapping up interior work.

J.E. “Jim” Ramseur Park:

Site grading and installation of the stormwater systems continue at J.E. “Jim” Ramseur Park. Crews also continued work installing the boardwalk that will become part of the Clarke Creek Greenway.

David Phillips Park:

Our next project to begin construction is David Phillips Park! Construction is set to begin later this summer.

Academy-Gibson Skate Park, Pump Track, and Sculpture Garden:

We anticipate the final designs to be ready for the Academy-Gibson Skate Park, Pump Track, and Sculpture Garden to be completed in the next month so we can take them to City Council for approval later this summer. Once approved, we’ll begin making plans to break ground!

Hartsell Park, Poplar Tent Trailhead Park, and Wilson Street Park:

All these projects are still in the design phase. The timelines for each project can be found on the “Bond Projects” page of our website.

W.W. Flowe Park and the Academy Recreation Center:

Design for these projects has not started yet. They’re anticipated to begin in 2027, with construction coming once final design is complete.
